Disqualified Party List in the 2013 Elections

COMELEC Chairman Sixto Brillantes
The Commission on Election or COMELEC recently announced that they disqualified at least 17 party list groups. The decision came after a thorough deliberation by the poll body. However, they did not disclosed the specific details or reasons why these organizations or groups should not run in the Party List Election next year.

Disqualified Party List:

ASKAL - Asosasyon ng Mangangalakal
AACMA, INC - Addicts and Alcoholics Carrying the Message Association

Delisted Party List:

United Movement Against Drug Foundation, Inc.

Unfortunately, the AKO Bicol party list was included in the disqualified group. In the last election, they have the biggest vote which gave then 3 seats in Congress. According to COMELEC, AKO Bicol does not represent a specific marginalized or under represented sector such as labor, peasant, fisherfolk, urban poor or indigenous communities.

The party list groups may still appeal their case provided they were disqualified at the division level. Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes also assured the public that they will try to reduce the number of Party-List groups that will run in the May 2013 Mid term elections.

From the 187 party list groups that participated in the last elections, the COMELEC said that there were at least 289 groups that already filed for accreditation.

Chinese Skin Whitening Products with Mercury Beware

Chinese skin whitening products mercury-tainted
An NGO recently warned the public about the proliferation of Chinese skin whitening products containing the hazardous chemical Mercury. This is alarming since the products can be bought in several Chinese drugs stores and local health stores in the country. This has been an issue years ago but the government still failed to curtail the distribution of these unapproved and hazardous skin products in the market.

Mercury Contamination is Dangerous

According to Ecowaste Coalition,93% of the skin whitening products that they tested contains excessive amounts of Mercury. It is a toxic chemical. This chemical can cause or damage the nervous system and kidneys. It is also harmful to young children. According to health experts, ingestion or inhalation of Mercury can affect the normal development of the brain of the fetus or child.

The organization provided a list of skin whitening products that contains high levels of mercury to warn the public.

Undisclosed Skin Whitening Ingredients

The mercury tainted products are marketed as beauty products promising instant results. They usually promise lighter complexion and removal of facial scars, freckles and spots. These products contain ingredients that are also popular in the health and welness industry. Some also contain herbs which are noted for its skin whitening properties. But there are some companies that do not disclose the ingredients on their products labels.

However, it is usually during the production process where mercury contamination happens probably due to poor manufacturing processes and non-compliance to industry standards and regulations.

Philippine FDA Urged to Issue Warnings

Ecowaste coalition urged the Philippine FDA to issue warnings and conduct further test on these mercury tainted products to protect consumers. They also urge consumers who were victims of mercury-tainted products to come out. A product is considered dangerous if it contains more than 1 parts per million (ppm) of mercury.

Reasons Why Pacquiao Lost Title to Bradley

Pacquiao lost his WBO Welterweight title
It seems that all boxing fans in the world are in awe after the judges favored the undefeated Timothy Bradley over Manny Pacquiao in their not so exciting bout in Las Vegas. Many boxing aficionados are still looking for some answers why the pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao lost to Bradley.

Stats would show that Pacquiao dominated the fight. Pacquiao landed 253 punches of the 751 thrown while Bradley only landed 159 of his 839 punches. But how about the power punches? Pacquiao unleashed 190 power punches as compared to Bradley's 108.

Even if you are not an expert in boxing, you would surely know who the real winner is. Though Manny may not get a unanimous decision, a split decision should still favor him.

Here's how the judges scored:

Judge Jerry Roth (115-113) - Pacquiao
Judge CJ Ross (115-113) - Bradley
Judge Duane Ford (115-113) - Bradley

scorecard in the pacquiao-bradley fight

Is it Rigged?

Many speculated that the result was rigged. Anyway boxing is a game. Top Rank promoter Bod Arum said that the score is unfathomable. But there are other theories why Manny Pacquiao lost to Bradley.

Theory 1 - Pacquiao is maybe too pre occupied with his Bible studies that he failed to prepare well for the fight. Manny lost his stamina in the later rounds.

Theory 2 - The judges scored in favor for Bradley because they expect more from Pacquiao (maybe a knock-out), who is the world best fighter

Theory 3 - The result is scripted

There could be a possibility that the results were rigged to force a rematch. A rematch with Bradley would mean more income for the promoters and sponsors. It could lead to a trilogy just like what happened with Marquez. More fights, more money, more income. Since there is no viable fighter yet that would best fit against Pacquaio, it is just but right to have another match up with Bradley.

But all of these are speculations.

However, if some of these are true, then the Congressman from Sarangani should now think about his next option. He might be a victim of a dirty game ( some even hinted that Bob Arum has a hand in this). Just like politics in this country where losers become winners. It should be a lesson for him. Anyway, he is a politician. He should know better.

List of Congressmen Watching Pacquiao vs Bradley

Watching live Pacquiao vs Bradley
After the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona, many of our Congressmen feels that it is time to take a long break from Congress. That includes watching Congressman Manny Pacquiao at Las Vegas, Nevada. The pound for pound king will be fighting the undefeated Timothy Bradley on Saturday, June 9.

Based on online reports, there are at least 40 Congressmen who already made ticket reservations in the Pacquiao vs Bradley fight.

According to House Speaker Sonny Belmonte, the Lower House will adjourn its second regular session this week. As a result, Congressmen who will be going to the US to watch Pacquiao vs Bradley fight will no longer be required to ask for travel authority.

Although there are more pressing issues and bills that should be tackled by these Congressmen, watching Manny Pacquiao live is more important to them. Of course, they would say that the best way to support Pacquiao in his latest fight is to be in the venue.

Let us hope that no public funds will be used by these Congressmen when they go to Las Vegas, Nevada.

I'll be updating this post to give you the names of Congressmen who will be watching Pacquiao vs Bradley in Las Vegas.

Politicians and Catholic Groups Wanted to Stop Lady Gaga Concert

For some people, the sudden protests from politicians to stop the concert of Lady Gaga is a publicity stunt for the upcoming election. Some of them even wanted a court order to successfully ban the concert. There are also religious groups that went on protest last Friday. They were urging Filipinos not to watch Lady Gaga's concert on May 21 and 22. They said the songs of the pop icon is blasphemous. This is aside from the usual stage production which involves some form of nudity and lewd conducts.

The local government of Pasay City where the concert will be held already informed the organizers, Ovation Productions, to tone down their concert to avoid any problems. Representatives from the LGU will monitor the concert to ensure they will not violate any laws. "We reminded the producers of Lady Gaga's concert that the show and the event as a whole shall not exhibit any nudity or lewd conduct which may be offensive to morals and good customs," Mayor Calixto told the AFP in an interview. "Although we respect artistic and musical expressions, I won't allow anyone or any group to provide acts which may be questionable in (any) way," he added.

Members of catholic groups will also monitor the concert and will send people to watch the concert to take possible evidences of lewd performances by Lady Gaga. Former representative and Pastor Benny Abante told the media that the production company should tone down their concert. "She should not sing songs that could offend our spiritual senses or wear bikinis in front of the crowd," he added.

Meanwhile, Ovation Productions, the promoter of Lady Gaga's concert in the Philippines, told a local media that people have the freedom to express themselves artistically. "Those who oppose what Lady Gaga is doing are not being forced to watch the concert," he said.

Indonesia and South Korea were some of the Asian countries who successfully ban or enforce strict rules on Lady Gaga's concert. Indonesia refused to issue permit for the said concert while South Korea ban the sale of tickets to citizens under 18 years old.

Let's see what will happen in the Lady Gaga Concert. Who can stop the concert of Lady Gaga?

Panamanian Diplomat Released Video of Pamela, Argued It's Not Rape

While many politician jumped into the bandwagon defending a Filipina allegedly raped by a diplomat from Panama, all of us heard just one side of the story. The woman who complained that she was raped asked the help of Senator Tito Sotto and other organizations to help her crusade, to jail the diplomat.

Under Philippine laws, an individual convicted of rape will face life imprisonment. However, the Panamanian official was released by the authorities after the DFA issued certification that the official is covered by diplomatic immunity. He was sent back to Panama and was declared persona non grata.

The diplomat, Erick Bairnals Shcks is a member of the technical and administrative staff of the Panama Maritime Authority. Senator Sotto even launched an inquiry as to why the diplomat evaded the case and even blamed the Department of Justice for their inefficiency and failure to file appropriate actions against the diplomat.

An interview with Yahoo Asia revealed that there could be no rape. That is according to the statement given by Erick Shcks. He said the woman, "Pamela," initiated the meeting two days after they met.

Below is an excerpt from Yahoo about the interview with Shcks.

On April 23, Shcks said Pamela called him and suggested a dinner date, to which he agreed. He said that after the dinner, they went to a bar where “Pamela” supposedly ordered Martini.

“There, we talked. She started hugging, kissing me. Then we said it’s a boring place. I told her, let’s go to my place, there is something to drink, I want you to know where I live (sic),” Shcks relates. “I was very interested in the girl. I really liked her at that moment and she agreed to go with me.”

Shcks said “Pamela” made a few calls while on their way to his unit. They later arrived at his place “very happy, hand to hand, not drunk, not drugged (sic),” he said.

“She agreed to go by herself. If this is rape, if the girl is afraid and if she needs to escape, she can escape,” he said.

At his apartment, Shcks said: “Inside the room, we listened to music, kissed each other, go to bed (sic). She acted like an experienced person,” he said, noting that “Pamela” left his unit past 1 am, conscious and not under the influence of drugs.

Here's a screen grab of the CCTV in the apartment where Shcks brought Pamela.

However, the legal counsel of Pamela argued that the case could fall into "date rape." They believe that the case is strong as evidenced by court decision saying they saw probable cause on the case. Shcks wants to discredit Pamela's credibility in releasing the videos and pictures.

Let's see what Senator Sotto can say about this.

Chinese TV Anchor Claims Philippines is Part of China, Chinese Ready for War

The Chinese really insists that they have sovereignty in the South China sea. Just recently, Fu Ying, the Chinese Vice for Foreign Ministry, told a Philippine diplomat that China is ready for the worst. Though she did not mention declaring war against the Philippines, they are really up for any serious scenario. "The Chinese side has... made all preparations to respond to any escalation of the situation by the Philippine side," she said.

China Ready for War Against the Philippines

"It is obvious that the Philippine side has not realised that it is making serious mistakes and instead is stepping up efforts to escalate tensions," she added.

But the Chinese government is not alone in their claim. The media are also taking part in the campaign to intensify the resistance on Philippines' claim on the Scarborough shoal. They even resorted to erroneous reporting and misrepresent facts. A Chinese journalist recently reported that President Aquino is not eager in claiming the disputed island.

And the worst thing, the Chinese people are now claiming the Philippines as their own. They now declare sovereignty over the entire Philipine archipelago.

Video Claiming China Owns the Philippines

A TV anchor of a nationwide Chinese TV network have said that China owns the Philippines. While this is not surprising for a country under communism, it is alarming that the media is being used to instigate public opinion and support.

Hope somebody can translate this in Filipino. According to AFP report, CCTV anchor He Jia said these things: "We all know that the Philippines is China's inherent territory and the Philippines belongs to Chinese sovereignty, this is an indisputable fact."

Are we ready for this? What can our senators, congressmen and other politicians say about this issue.?

Claudine and Raymart Brawled with Journalist Mon Tulfo, Caused by Lousy Cebu Pacific Service

If the sentiments of ordinary people are not being heard in the media regarding the lousy services of local airlines in the Philippines, a celebrity couple made it to the headlines. On Sunday, Raymart and Claudine Baretto engaged in a physical altercation with veteran journalist Mon Tulfo in NAIA Terminal 3.

Based on online reports, the scuffle started when Claudine reprimanded a Cebu Pacific employee regarding their missing luggage. A man, who turns out to be Mon Tulfo, is taking a footage of the scenario. Raymart allegedly confronted Tulfo but the journalist punched him. On the other hand, Tulfo said that he was just defending himself because he was already being ganged up by the companions of the celebrity couple.

The incident resulted to a brawl. In the video below, Tulfo got contusions in the face while Claudine complained that she was kicked by Tulfo. Both parties are planning to file a case.

Meanwhile, Raymart and Claudine wanted to see the airport CCTV video footage to see what really happened and who initiated the fight. Since both parties are connected to TV Networks, Mon Tulfo on TV5 while the Santiago's on GMA 7, we expect that they will have their own story to tell.

Video of Raymart and Claudine vs. Tulfo Brawl at the NAIA

Let us hear what Cebu Pacific can say about this incident. Local air carriers should not be just after the profit. They must provide better services to the public.

Maybe its time to review the laws governing the operation of local carriers in the country. The CAB, NAIA, DOTC, and other concerned government agencies must act now to resolve these problems- overbooking, delayed flights, poor customer service, poor facilities in airports, canceled flights, etc...

China Continues to Bully RP on Territorial Dispute

Scarborough Shoal claimed by China and the Philippines
The Chinese government continues its effort of showing its might by sending more ships to the disputed Scarborough Shoal. In the initial standoff, some of the Chinese ships were withdrawn from the disputed island but recently send their most advanced maritime law enforcement ship. The Philipine military also reported that at least 6 ships were sent by China to boost their presence in the Scarborough Shoal. On the other hand, the Philippines only had one ship the BRP EDSA II, a search and rescue ship lacking the surveilance and firepower capabilities.

The presence of BRP EDSA II in the Panatag shoal shows the Philippines' strong resistance on the incursion of the Chinese in the Philippine waters. Secretary Albert del Rosario encourage other ASEAN nations to take a stand on the issue. He told the media a few days ago that the claims of China is baseless. "I think since the freedom of navigation and unimpeded commerce in the West Philippine Sea are of great importance to many nations, all should consider what China is endeavoring to do in the Panatag Shoal in order to pursue its so-called full sovereign rights over the entire West Philippine Sea on the basis of their 9-dash claim using a historical record that is clearly baseless,” the Foreign Affairs Secretary said.

Philippine Taking the Issue to ITCLOS

The country will seek the help of the International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) to help settle the dispute. However, China warned the Philippines not to internationalise the issue and urged the country to settle it through bilateral talks. China doesn't want the United Nations Tribunal to handle the dispute in the Spratlys Islands.

China has no Basis in Claiming the Scarborough Shoal

According to veteran journalist based in China, the Chinese government instills in their people that the entire South China Sea belongs to them. The rage is also intense in their homeland whenever a country such as the Philippines claims ownership on some of the areas in the South China Sea. But the Chinese government lacks the necessary documents to back up their ownership. According to experts, China do not have enough evidences to prove their claim in the South China Sea particularly in the Scarborough Shoal or in the Panatag Shoal.

A leak information from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a local Chinese scholar showed that the country has no enough basis in claiming the disputed area. Though it is being thought in Chinese schools, they could not find historical evidences that they have sovereignty in the disputed islands particularly the Huangyan Islands. Further, they could not justify the "nine-dashes" claim of China.

This is probably the reason why China wanted to avoid legal confrontation because they can't support their claims. They opt to use force, intimidation, and even use cyber attacks to bully the Philippines and retreat from its current stand. They also allowed Chinese fishermen to poach in the disputed area. That would mean condoning the illegal activities of their own citizens.

Panatag Shoal within Philippine Economic Zone

UNCLOS Exclusive Ecomic Zone
Under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), a country can claim a 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zone (EEZ). Panatag Shoal is just 124 nautical miles from the town of Masinloc in Zambalez. The Philippines also has a map that proves Scarborough Shoal is part of the town of Masinloc.

If China continues to show its military power on the disputed islands, it only shows that they do not want to settle the issue in a diplomatic way.

On the other hand, can the Philippines assert its sovereinty in the West Philippine Sea or we will succumb to the bullying of the Chinese and let them grab the entire South China Sea.

As one commenter said, it's between 92M Filipino people vs. 1.3B Chinese people, what can we do?

UPDATES on Scarborough Shoal Dispute:

-The Chinese government ordered its Tour Operators/Agencies to cancel trips to the Philippines. That would mean the country will be loosing at least 2,000 tourists per year.

-A fishing ban was imposed by China on some areas of the South China Sea including the disputed area in
Scarborough shoal. This will  start on May 16 and will end August 1. The Philippine government refused to aknowledge the ban since it includes the area being claimed by both countries. But  the government will also adopt similar measure to replenish fish stocks in the area.

Chiz Escudero Filed Annulment, Still Want to Be Independent in 2013

Annulment: Chiz Escudero and Wife
The Senator from the province of Sorsogon in Bicol allegedly filed an annulment after he and his wife decided to part ways. The camp of Senator Chiz Escudero doesn't want to confirm the reports. It was first reported by Ricky Lo in his column in Philippine Star. Chiz has been estranged for more than two years now. His wife left their home in December of 2010. They have two kids. According to Lo, the marriage has to come to an end after the two failed to settle issues. However, there was no third party involved. There has been reports that Tintin Escudero is being linked to a member of a dance group. On the other hand, Chiz Escudero has long been linked to Kris Aquino. The TV host is already single but still insist that she wants to remain single. Chiz Escudero declined to make comments on the said annulment case.

Want to Be Independent in 2013

Top Senatoriable in 2013

Chiz Escudero is considered as one of the top contender in the 2013 senatorial elections. Let's see if the annulment issue will become a factor in his candicacy. Will it affect his reputation as a Senator or people will just consider this annulment as a normal thing?

Erap-Binay Puts New Coalition for 2013 Election, United Nationalist Alliance

United Nationalists Alliance (UNA Coalition)
Here's the updated list of Senatoriables for the 2013 Elections both for LP and UNA:
LP Coalition and UNA Senatorial Candidates

Senator Koko Pimentel confirmed to the media that the two established political parties in the Philippines decided to unite for the 2013 Senatorial Elections. The Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) signed an agreement with the Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP). PDP-Laban is headed by Vice-President Jejomar Binay while PMP is the party of former President Joseph Estrada.

Political analysts says that the coalition is not a threat to the Liberal Party headed by President Noynoy Aquino. Sources said that PDP-Laban had already made some talks with the Liberal Party but it would be difficult to get the support of all its members. They decided to look for other parties willing to create a coalition for the 2013 Senatorial elections.

The coalition between PDP-Laban and PMP is not surprising since the two parties already helped each other in previous elections. They fought the previous administration by putting United Opposition or UNO. According to Senator Pimentel, the new coalition will be called United Nationalist Alliance (UNA).

The party's nominees for the 2013 National Senatorial elections is already complete and in fact, more than 12 Senatoriables are already willing to run under their banner. "The coalition ticket, under the Binay umbrella, is already overflowing, meaning it has more than 12 names on the list. That means the Vice President has to choose and trim the list down," said Sen Pimentel.

Some of the candidates for 2013 are Joey de Venecia III, Cagayan Rep. Juan Ponce Enrile Jr., re-electionist senators Francis Escudero, Loren Legarda, Gregorio Honasan, Koko Pimentel, and Alan Peter Cayetano. The nominees from the PMP has yet to be named.

Meanwhile, VP Binay is open to the possibility of accepting former Senator Miguel Zubiri in the coalition. But this is opposed by Koko Pimentel. Former Senator Zubiri resigned from the Senate after he lost from the recount and the alleged election anomalies in Mindanao benefited him.

We will update this post when the new list of Senators for 2013 is announced by the United Nationalists Alliance.

UPDATE:
UNA Spokesman JV Bautista confirmed, 3 more candidates from PMP. They are:
1. former Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri
2. congresswoman Mitos Magsaysay
3.Cebu governor Gwendolyn Garcia

Robinsons Galleria Robbery: Another Question on Mall Security Measures

Robinsons Galleria Ortigas Mall Robbery
Two suspects forcibly enters the Robinsons Galleria Mall in Ortigas at around 10 to 10:30 am. The robbers targeted roving tellers of a bank (Security Bank) who are supposed to deliver money to Sanry's Money Exchange located at the first floor.

There were at least 5 people injured in the incident. The suspects fired at the victims and used two grenades as a shield when they fled using a motorcycle. Police also reported that some of the victims were held at gun point as evidenced by several empty shells of a caliber .45 recovered at the crime scene.

Two bystanders were injured during the blast. A security guard was also wounded in the shootout and two others were also injured. Reports revealed that a mall employee and a call center agent were among those injured in the robbery.

The authorities said that the suspects were able to nabbed unspecified amount of money. Investigation on the incident is still on going.

Robinsons Land issued a statement regarding the incident: "Atleast 2 armed men tried to rob the roving tellers of Security Bank in Quezon City at around 10 a.m. today. Police authorities responded to the alarm, which is part of the mall security setup, within 15 minutes."

However, witnesses told the media that the shootout lasted for several minutes. The suspects fought with security guards and the mall security but they were still able to flee using a motorcycle as a get away vehicle. Many are wondering why the robbers escaped the alleged tight security of the mall and its proximity to police stations. Is this the tight mall security that is being implemented by Robinsons Galleria?

Meanwhile, the mall continued its operation after two hours.

---

In our latest update on Robinsons Galleria robbery, one of the security guards who was wounded died while being treated at the Medical City in Pasig. A witness told the media that the gun fight happened inside the mall and not outside as previously reported.

Deadly Philippine Quake Hits Visayas, Death Toll Rising as Rescue Efforts Continues

This is another tragedy that hits the Visayas region. The 6.9 magnitude quake that struck heavily populated provinces of Negros and Cebu on Monday resulted to landslides, infrastructure damages and claimed the lives of at least 52 people. But authorities say that the number is increasing as search and rescue operations started today. There were also at least 29 people went missing after the quake. Most of them were believed to be trapped in landslides in Guihulngan, a coastal city of 100,000 people in Negros where the epicenter is recorded.

As of Tuesday, Phivolcs recorded 745 aftershocks and authorities said that this will continue in the next few days. The highest recorded aftershock is 6.2 at around 6 in the afternoon yesterday. Though they assured the public that aftershocks will not result to a 6.5 magnitude earthquake but residents are still worried about thier safety. A tsunami warning (alert 2) was issued yesterday but coastal residents were allowed to return to their homes in the afternoon.

A barangay in Guihulngan City, Barangay Planas, suffered the most where 30 houses were buried in the earthquake- triggered landslides. Most of the reported casualties came from that barangay. Several casualties were also reported in Tayasan town. These are the areas nearest to the epicenter of the quake.

Senator Lito Lapid Claims Money for Medical Purpose, Wife for House

Senator Lito Lapid:
Wife Arrested in US for Undeclared Money
This is again another typical story about our politicians. Where to put their money. Or maybe hide. The recent apprehension of Senator Lito Lapid's wife in Las Vegas International Airport last Jan. 15 makes our mind wondering about the real purpose of bringing into the United States such huge sum of money.

Marissa Lapid was arrested for bringing in to the US undeclared amount of dollars when he travelled to the country. She was charged for smuggling $50,000 which is punishable with jail term. Mrs Lapid declared only $10,000 and P10,000 in cash. However, inspection of airport officials in her luggage revealed that she has a total of $50,137 and P15,700.

According to online reports, authorities only returned worth $493 and confiscated the rest of her money. Mrs Lapid is out on bail and will be required to appear in a Nevada District Court in February.

Mrs Lapid claimed that the money is intended for her house. However, his husband senator told the local media in the Philippines that her wife will be seeking medical attention in the US, thus the huge sum of money. She had an excess amount of money maybe because she will be seeking treatment for her heart problem, said the Senator.

While the country is seeking the truth whether the current Chief Justice amazed wealth through illegal means, one senator judge is dragged into a similar scenario. Senator Judge Lito Lapid must explain why he had a conflicting statement with his wife. It's not hard for people to surmise that they might be hiding something. Probably bringing outside of the country money which may come from unexplained sources. In fact, former Governor Ed Panlilio wants to revive the case against the Lapids regarding the P500M graft case on lahar quarry in the province.

We just hope that Sen Lapid can give a justifiable reason for this incident. And let's hope that he can also give a fair judgment on the graft and corruption case against Chief Justice corona.
